Startland Education graduates their second cohort of Early Educator Fellows
Startland is excited to have graduated the second cohort of our Early Educator Fellowship this past December.
The Early Educator Fellowship is a two-semester program for grade school educators to learn the human-centered design thinking process and implement it directly within their classroom––all while creating a network of support amongst their fellow teachers.
As part of the graduation, Fellows from our second cohort showcased their final projects. Check them out below:
Final Projects
St. Paul's Episcopal Day School
Teachers: Carey Jones (1st Grade) & Kelly Van Maren (6th Grade)
Channeling a Project Based Learning methodology, Carey and Kelly paired 1st and 6th grade students together to reimagine their outdoor classroom spaces. As part of the lead-up to this, these teachers had their students re-imagine various historical contraptions throughout history using design thinking.
Carver Dual Language
Teachers: Anabel Vargas & Chelsea Corbin (4th Grade)
For their project, Annie and Chelsea’s students worked throughout the year to address three main concerns: cleaning trash, decorating the school with student art, and revitalizing their school garden. The project went so well that students will be continuing beyond this experience.
Basehor-Linwood Intermediate School
Teachers: Nicole Davis (1st Grade) & Kelly Kelly (3rd-5th Grade)
Nicole & Kelly collaborated on numerous design thinking challenges throughout the year. Perhaps their most notable is when students went through a full design thinking cycle on saving honey bee populations during their science unit.
Foreign Language Academy
Teachers: Timothy Nash & Shineta Horton (6th Grade)
Tim and Shineta spent their fellowship finding ways to incorporate virtual reality into their curriculum, and empowering students to create things beyond the limitations of the classroom. They demoed virtual landscapes their students created during our showcase.
