How to Define the Problem

In this video, you’re going to learn how to “define the problem” in the design thinking process. Successful solutions hinge on how well you understand and have captured the problem and need of the user.

Here’s what we’ll cover in this video:

#1: First, you’ll learn how to create a problem statement. Here’s the format: “the problem is X because of Y and it impacts Z.”

#2: Then, we’ll teach you how to develop a needs statement. Here’s the format: “users need a way to [insert user’s need here], but because / so that [what you learned about the user].

#3: Finally, we’ll walk you through the “Five Whys” activity to better refine your problem statement. By the end of this video, you will know how to put precise language around your users and their pain points.
