Showcase: Social Change Interns pitch to a full house

Issues like women’s health are important to young people.

Fast fashion, women’s healthcare, immigration, and equity in schools. Those topics and more were on display when the ninth cohort of Social Change Interns pitched to a full house at our SCI Showcase hosted by Multistudio.

The internship takes young people from across the city and asks them “What social issue is important to you?” Students then take the next 8 weeks to utilize human centered design thinking to research and create solutions for these issues. This cohort consisted of 27 students from 16 different schools with grades ranging from ninth to twelfth. Additionally our fall cohorts are always women (self-identified) only cohorts. This creates a space and platform for these young women to collaborate and shine.

Students created solutions using human centered design thinking

The showcase is a celebration of the work that these students complete, but also a launching point for them to continue to work towards a better future for themselves and their peers. Besides pitching their social topics and solutions, students had the opportunity to network with entrepreneurs, social innovators and thought leaders. Those in attendance had the opportunity to provide feedback and create lasting connections with the interns to help empower and support them in their endeavors. Through these connections students were able to identify key stakeholders in the audience who might have resources, knowledge or relationships that can help the students implement their solutions.

SCI Alumni and Interns share about their experiences

While this event marks the end of their internship, we know that it marks the beginning of something amazing and unique for everyone who was in attendance including students, parents, and community members. We are so proud of what these students have accomplished in the past 8 weeks, but we are even more excited to see how they will go on to solve problems using human-centered design thinking, and what they will do to create a better future for everyone.
