Startland and Kauffman Foundation launch our 2022 Student Voice Showcase

The Challenge:

How might we leverage student voice to create a culture of Real World Learning In education?

For the 2021-2022 school year, Startland partnered with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation to launch our second cohort of Student Voice: a program that groups students and teachers together in teams to create solutions informed by real-world learning for their districts.

Students from six different Kansas City Area school districts pitched their final solutions at Plexpod Westport on April 21st and, subsequently, graduated from the program. Check out some of the final pitches below!

Final Pitches

“Student-Owned Spaces”
Northeast High School

Discovering that only using their own voices wouldn’t move their project forward, Justin and Khalyl are using Tik Tok to gather more student voices to better engage with stakeholders on creating a student space.

“R-P Community Compact”
Raymore-Peculiar High School

The R-P Community Compact is a list of guiding principles developed by Becky, Avery, and Angelica to level the playing field, and center student voices and experiences within their school.

“Your Future, Your Voice.”
Blue Springs High School

Matthew and Jasmine decided that in order for students to participate in real-world learning opportunities, they have to be excited. Thus, they created a 4-step campaign from promotional campaign to student-created resources.

“Accelerate Conference”
Piper High School

With racial tensions at their school diminishing the student voice, Jillian and Langston developed a leadership conference to empower Black populations across several different schools.

“Community Leadership”
Guadalupe Centers High School

Pivoting from their original idea to lead student-led class audits, Jennifer and Sandra focused on creating a new class called “Community Leadership.” The curriculum required students to go through the human-centered design process to create impact in their community across several social issues.

“School Beautification”
Fort Osage High School

Focusing on the need for physical spaces to help students thrive, Brooklyn and Sadie helped Fort Osage identify 5 spaces they could renovate into study and lunch-spaces for students.
