Startland Education graduates our seventh Social Change Internship cohort!

This spring, we launched the seventh cohort of our Social Change Internship––an 8-week program that challenges students to inspire, encourage and create social change.

Our seventh cohort was open to high school students across the Kansas City Metro area, and even featured students from Ohio and India.

On March. 7th, we graduated the cohort at KC Public Library’s North-East Branch. Check out what our teams were able to create through the experience below!

Final Pitches from our Seventh Cohort

Poverty
Interns: Suhani, Gita, Rouida, Epuna
Solution: After completing their empathy work, this team found that many didn’t know about resources for low-income students in Kansas City. This team proposed a marketing campaign and “database” to combat this aspect of poverty.

Education Reform
Interns: Alison, Younes, Esha, Caroline, Cameran
Solution: Identifying that 14-18 year olds are struggling with life skills (such as tackling fear of judgement, public speaking, etc.), this team pitched a virtual course called “Life School” where students can enroll online and ascertain these skills.

Sustainability
Interns: Kaleyce, Emberley
Solution: Emphasizing the current fast fashion crisis the world is facing, this team proposed a virtual thrift store where audiences can “rent” sought after pieces and return them for others to use..

Women’s Rights
Interns: Beautiful-Kela, Brianna, Tanishka, Allison
Solution: Honing in on resource-deficiencies for women across the world, this team’s focus was creating a ‘one-stop shop’ magazine where women can find the things they need.

Immigration
Interns: William, Echo, Shireen
Solution: Surveying students at their respective schools, this team conceptualized a mentorship program that matches first-gen students with adult immigrants in their local community.

Environment
Interns: Raahul, Kelan, Jazzlynne
Solution: Noting the poor road conditions their parents have to face during their commute, this group is mobilizing 13-18 year olds to advocate for “no potholes” by the time they reach driving age.

Climate Change
Interns: Benjamin, Peyton, Maieva
Solution: Determining most of Gen-Z isn’t learning about how climate change is affecting the world, this group is advocating for the creation of an informational group providing facts/stats through Instagram, text and email

Gun Violence
Interns: Gabrielle, Mercedes, Kiyah
Solution: Creating “Outreach KC” during their time in SCI, this group is creating a mental health coalition focused on helping Gen-Z cope with gun violence in the Kansas City Metro.

Our Impact

“My experience in Startland has shaped the way I tackle problems. Whenever I have projects or assignments, I’ll think about Startland and how ‘to go fast, you must start slow.’”

— 12th Grader, Olathe East High School

“I've learned a lot about having empathy for others and their problems. Forming connections with the community is another thing that I have learned.”
