Q+A with Educator Camille Burgmeier

Camille Burgmeier is a 9th-12th grade biology teacher at DeLaSalle Education Center. Passionate about making the classroom a better place for her students and furthering her teacher development, Camille took action by participating in our City-wide MECA Methods training last month.

Read about Camille’s experience in the training and her journey as a teacher below!

Who or what inspired you to become a teacher?

Camille: Honestly, I was inspired to become a teacher by my stuffed animals needing me to teach them the alphabet. But more importantly, I continued to be inspired by my students and fellow-educators year after year to stay a teacher.

Camille: “One of my favorite students and me twinning!”

Is there anything you wish non-educators understood about your profession?

Camille: I wish they understood how they could be a part of education! I wish they would come to my classroom and talk to my students and do projects with them and be mentors!

What does being a “design thinker” mean to you?

Camille: Design thinkers are curious. They get to the bottom of things and know how to collaborate to make change happen.

Why do you think it’s important to teach students this skill?

Camille: It's 2022. We all have the internet in our hands. It is becoming increasingly less important to teach students arbitrary facts. We have to teach students how to think - how to find and process information, how to analyze, criticize and empathize, how to create.

What was your biggest takeaway from City-wide MECA Methods?

Camille: My biggest takeaway was living the Design Thinking Process as a student might. It was transformational in my ability to be a facilitator.
